Who is DBSA of Greater St. Louis?

The Depression Bipolar Support Alliance of Greater St. Louis is a not-for-profit organization composed of individuals who have been diagnosed as having and affective (depression or bipolar) and their support people.


DBSA Mission Statement

The primary mission of DBSA of Greater St. Louis is to provide education and support to people in the Greater St. Louis area whose lives are affected by mental illness so as to enhance their employment opportunities, improve recreation and relationship skills, and significantly reduce the recurrence of symptoms through self-help.


The following are symptoms of Depression and Mania. They are not the only symptoms, but they are among the most common.


SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

  • Appetite Disturbance
  • Profound lack of energy
  • Lack of enjoyment or pleasure
  • Self-criticism
  • Feeling hopeless, helpless, or worthless
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering
  • Unable to make decisions
  • Anxiety
  • Guilt, low self-esteem
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings

SYMPTOMS OF MANIA

  • Supercharged energy
  • Little need for sleep
  • Super-organization
  • Loud and rapid speech
  • Poor judgment: i.e. spending sprees, telephoning people all day and night, foolish business decisions, increased sexual activity
  • Heightened level of involvement in politics or religion
  • Grandiosity
  • Impulsive traveling
  • Overly argumentative, impulsive, or easily distracted
